Elias Canetti biography, recipient of the 1981 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born into a Sephardic Jewish family in Ruse, Bulgaria.

Elias Canetti, recipient of the 1981 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born into a Sephardic Jewish family in Ruse, Bulgaria. His father was a merchant who died when he was seven years old. He was educated at Vienna University where he earned his Ph.D. in chemistry. Despite the degree, he never worked as a chemist.

Canetti was a novelist, dramatist, and essayist, and he wrote three volumes of his autobiography. His work, HOCHZEIT (THE WEDDING), was published when he was 27. He is most famous for MASSE UND MACHT (CROWDS AND POWER), a study of mass psychology. His only novel was DIE BLENDUNG (THE TOWER OF BABEL) which was published in 1935.

Elias Canetti died in Zurich, Switzerland in 1994.
